GEOL 27540 - Paleontology


Credit Hours: 4
A general study of fossils, including classification of plants and animals (paleobiology), development and evolution of prehistoric life (paleobiogeography), paleontological techniques, and use of fossils as: time series, biostratigraphy, depositional environment, paleoenvironmental change, resource evaluation (oil, gas, coal, etc.) and ecological guides. Lab includes study and identification of the major fossil groups. Emphasis is on both vertebrate and invertebrates, with a general review of microfossils, macrofossils, plants (paleobotany), and trace fossils (Ichnofacies). 

Prerequisite(s): GEOL 27212  or permission of instructor.
Hours per week: Three one-hour lectures and one two-hour laboratory.
