EDCI 62222 - Social Studies in the Elementary School


Credit Hours: 3
This course provides students with an introduction to organizational and curricular issues in teaching social studies in elementary grades. It focuses on understanding the interrelated nature of the key social studies disciplines of history, economics, government, sociology, and geography. Key concepts in social studies education will be addressed such as curriculum standards and content knowledge expectations. Candidates will learn standards-based content, trends and issues in social studies education, inquiry-based pedagogies, discipline-specific thinking skills in the social studies, teaching and learning resources, and effective teaching practices all aimed at developing the knowledge and skills students need (such as critical thinking and problem solving) for full participation in global and diverse society. 

Recommended Prerequisite(s): Successful completion of the Northwest Core.
